Roof rats range along the lower half of the East Coast and throughout the Gulf States upward into Arkansas. Sometimes they transmit disease indirectly, for example, when fleas first bite an infected rat, then a person. Having completed the repairs to wires, and possibly vacuumed feces or replaced insulation (not usually necessary) fumigate the attic to kill any remaining parasites or spores from the rats. You will never solve a rat problem until you find all of these openings, and seal them shut with steel, which rats are unable to chew through. In landscaped yards they often live in overgrown shrubbery or vines, feeding on ornamentals, vegetables, fruits, and nuts. The young are born in a nest about 21 to 23 days after conception. The preferred habitat of Norway rats is just about anywhere people reside. Trap at left is modified by fastening a piece of cardboard to expand its trigger size (traps with expanded treadles can also be purchased from several manufacturers).

There is often a correlation between rat problems and the keeping of dogs, especially where dogs are fed outdoors. Remove pre harvest fruits or nuts that drop in backyards. However, rats are a nuisance animal wherever you choose to release them, and they also have a particularly low rate of survival once they have been relocated, so in most cases using humane lethal traps will be the best way to deal with the infestation. Rats usually begin searching for food shortly after sunset. I highly recommend snap traps, not live cage traps, certainly not glue boards, and most definitely not poison! Never poison rats, it doesn't solve the problem and it just creates more problems. They prefer to live in high places, but may live in a variety of environments. In a human environment, the rodents will consume almost any food to which they have access. Nests inside and under buildings, or in piles of rubbish or wood. Rat droppings are small, dark, cylindrically shaped, and are about one-half inch to three-fourths inch long with blunt ends. The first and most crucial thing is to inspect the house and find all possible entry holes, and before starting any trapping, carry out repairs and seal the attic so the rats can't get in again. They may live in trees, such as palm, or in attics, and climb down to a food source.

It is difficult to find suitable places to lay the tracking powder that will not create a potential problem of contaminating food or materials below the placement sites. Grease marks (from the oil and dirt of rats) often appear along walls next to runways. Prune to raise the skirts and remove any nests constructed in the trees. Use a powerful flashlight to spot rats and to determine travel routes for the best locations to set baits and traps. Anticoagulants (slow-acting, chronic toxicants). Most commercial baits are registered for both species of rats and for house mice, but often they are less acceptable to roof rats than to the other species. In most of our urban areas, Norway rats may be seen scurrying around after dark looking for food in garbage cans and other places where human refuse is found. Presently, only one such modified trap is commercially available. While rats can live in the walls, the kitchen, under the house, etc. the most common place for rats to inhabit in a house is the attic. As their name suggests, roof rats may be found in elevated areas such as trees, rafters, attics and roofs. Roof rats are likely to found in coastal, near-coastal areas and port cities.
