The most common rat in the area is the Norway rat. They may eat vegetation, but prefer to meat or meat-related wastes. Body is smaller and sleeker than the Norway rat’s. The Norway rat is also called brown rat, house rat, sewer rat, and wharf rat.

They prefer to live in high places, but may live in a variety of environments. Rats have been plaguing humans for centuries, famous for their continuously-growing sharp teeth, their desire for human food, their tendency to get into homes and buildings and create nests and their health problems - rats are the essence of a pest. By this time they have learned what is good to eat by experimenting with potential food items and by imitating their mother. Roof rats frequently enter buildings from the roof or from accesses near overhead utility lines, which they use to travel from area to area. Certain first-generation anticoagulants are registered as tracking powders for roof rat control; however, none of the second generation materials are so registered. In tropical or semi tropical regions, the season may be nearly year-round. See Rat Trapping Tips and Rat Baiting Tips. The efficacy of such products for rats is generally lacking. Roof rats frequently enter buildings from the roof or from accesses near overhead utility lines, which they use to travel from area to area. Indoors, runways appear as clean paths through dust or dirt. The social behavior of free-living roof rats is very difficult to study and, as a result, has received less attention than that of Norway rats. Most commercial baits are registered for both species of rats and for house mice, but often they are less acceptable to roof rats than to the other species. Exclusion and sealing of sites greater than ½ inch (about the size of a dime) using screens, flashing, door sweeps and other materials to keep rats from entering a structure. Emphasis should be placed on the removal of as much harborage as is practical. The reproductive potential of one female Norway rat is about 50-60 young per year. The key is to control rat populations, not individual rats. Like the Norway rat, the roof rat is implicated in the transmission of a number of diseases to humans, including murine typhus, leptospirosis, salmonellosis (food poisoning), rat-bite fever, and plague. This type of rat control service does not ever solve the problem.
