Adults range in weight from about 5-10 ounces. Females can breed year-round. Once you know the location of the rats, you can set traps or place bait. Female adults will produce about seven litters per year and will mate again about 18 hours after giving birth to her litter of about eight pups. Remove pre harvest fruits or nuts that drop in backyards. Having completed the repairs to wires, and possibly vacuumed feces or replaced insulation (not usually necessary) fumigate the attic to kill any remaining parasites or spores from the rats. Fur is smooth. Most pest control companies set rat traps, perhaps squirt some flammable expansion foam at very obvious holes, and then put you on a monthly service to remove the rats that are still getting in to your home. At about 3 months of age they are completely independent of the mother and are reproductively mature. Seal any openings larger than ¼ inch with caulk, wood, mesh, or other appropriate materials. For rats, all openings greater than 1/2" should be sealed.

The key is to control rat populations, not individual rats. In most instances, rats are very wary. Successful long-term rat control is not simple. They are particularly useful for house mouse control in situations where other methods seem less appropriate. Because roof rats are fast and agile, they are not easy prey for mammalian or avian predators. Rats can also transmit rat bite fever through bacteria in their mouth. Roof rats have a strong tendency to avoid new objects in their environment and this neophobia can influence control efforts, for it may take several days before they will approach a bait station or trap. Strip and destroy all unwanted fruit when the harvest period is over. Please also read the section on Sanitation, as it is an important consideration in rodent control. And most of all, you want someone who will do this complex work correctly. Some traps should be placed on the floor, but more should be placed above floor level (for example, on top of stacked commodities).
