To avoid rodent infestation, remove potential rodent food and water sources and store food for people and pets in sealed containers. Clear away debris and other material that rodents can hide in.  Safely clean up rodent droppings, urine and nesting areas, always wearing gloves and spraying material with disinfectant until thoroughly soaked before attempting to remove or clean.

Bait stations are sometimes difficult to place for roof rat control because of the rodents’ overhead traveling characteristics. Most rats in attics enter via roof entry points - although they can get into the building a variety of ways. They can transmit these diseases through physical contact, bites, by contamination or by fleas that are feeding on the rodent. Generally, Roof rats stay within 100 miles inland. Certain first-generation anticoagulants are registered as tracking powders for roof rat control; however, none of the second generation materials are so registered. In residences where rats may be living in the attic and feeding outdoors, the damage may be restricted to tearing up insulation for nesting or gnawing electrical wiring. Taste perception of rats is good; once rats locate food, the taste will determine their food preferences. Also, roof rats are likely to consume insects.

At least in some parts of the United States and elsewhere in the world, the methods used to control rats have reduced Norway rat populations but have permitted roof rats to become more prominent, apparently because they are more difficult to control. The social behavior of free-living roof rats is very difficult to study and, as a result, has received less attention than that of Norway rats. They may be frightened by sound-producing devices for awhile but they become accustomed to constant and frequently repeated sounds quickly. Rat droppings are small, dark, cylindrically shaped, and are about one-half inch to three-fourths inch long with blunt ends. Trap at left is modified by fastening a piece of cardboard to expand its trigger size (traps with expanded treadles can also be purchased from several manufacturers). The common wooden snap traps that are effective for Norway rats are effective for roof rats. Where label instructions permit, small blocks can be placed or fastened on rafters, ledges, or even attached to tree limbs, where they are readily accessible to the arboreal rats. Body is smaller and sleeker than the Norway rat’s. Neophobia is more pronounced in roof rats than in Norway rats. Newer rodenticides are much more efficacious and have resulted in the phasing out of these older materials over the last 20 years. Raisins, prunes, peanut butter, nutmeats, and gumdrops make good baits and are often better than meat or cat food baits.

Adult females are able to reproduce at 3-5 months old, can produce up to five litters each year with about 5-8 young in each litter. Sometimes rats get into the kitchen area and feed on stored foods. These rats are nocturnal and are excellent climbers. The muzzle of the roof rat is pointed and the overall appearance of the roof rat is much more streamlined and sleek looking than a Norway rat. Tracking powders can be placed in voids behind walls, near points of entry, and in well-defined trails. The first and most crucial thing is to inspect the house and find all possible entry holes, and before starting any trapping, carry out repairs and seal the attic so the rats can't get in again. Disturbances such as habitat modifications should be avoided until the population is under control. Exclusion is an important rodent control technique. However, a few differences must be taken into account. These tactics have been ruled fraudulent by the FTC, and they DO NOT WORK. Grease marks (from the oil and dirt of rats) often appear along walls next to runways.
