Wild rodents can cause home damage, contaminate food, and cause illness in people and pets.  Rodent infestations are more likely to occur when events, such as flooding, displace them. To avoid rodent infestation, remove potential rodent food and water sources and store food for people and pets in sealed containers. Clear away debris and other material that rodents can hide in.  Safely clean up rodent droppings, urine and nesting areas, always wearing gloves and spraying material with disinfectant until thoroughly soaked before attempting to remove or clean.

Grease marks are produced as the rodent travels along an edge, and the oils in their fur are deposited. They lead you to believe there is no other rat control solution. Grease marks (from the oil and dirt of rats) often appear along walls next to runways. Cage trapping is often considered to be the most humane way of dealing with an animal problem, and certainly when it comes to larger animals it is fair to say that it can be effective. Black or brown, can be over 40 cm long, with a long tail, large ears and eyes, and a pointed nose. A preferred categorization would be “anticoagulants” and “non-anticoagulants” or “other rodenticides. They may not be effective on roof rats, however, because of their usual placement. In tropical or semi tropical regions, the season may be nearly year-round.

The older rodenticides, formerly referred to as acute toxicants, such as arsenic, phosphorus, red squill, and ANTU, are either no longer registered or of little importance in rat control. Only construction grade materials are used. This is a great supplementary treatment to trapping when you are dealing with larger rodent populations, or for outdoor populations. Adult females are able to reproduce at 3-5 months old, can produce up to five litters each year with about 5-8 young in each litter. This is why traps and bait stations may be avoided for a day or two. Rat densities (numbers of rats in a given area) are determined primarily by the suitability of the habitat—the amount of available nutritional and palatable food and nearby protective cover (shelter or harborage). Disturbances such as habitat modifications should be avoided until the population is under control. Only after you've sealed the openings shut, you should start trapping and removal. Read more about where rats live. Like the Norway rat, the roof rat is implicated in the transmission of a number of diseases to humans, including murine typhus, leptospirosis, salmonellosis (food poisoning), rat-bite fever, and plague. Rat densities (numbers of rats in a given area) are determined primarily by the suitability of the habitat—the amount of available nutritional and palatable food and nearby protective cover (shelter or harborage).

Roof rat droppings are 12 to 13 mm with pointed ends, whereas Norway rat droppings are 18 to 20 mm and capsule shaped. Once you're satisfied that there is no more evidence of rats, and you are not trapping any new rats, you should clean the attic or whatever area they were living in, to remove the contamination and biohazard, and also to eliminate the rat scent, which will attract new rats to try to chew their way into the house in the future. The commercially available, expanded plastic treadle traps, such as the Victor Professional Rat Trap, are particularly effective if properly located in well-traveled paths. A vegetation-free margin around the grove will slow rat invasions because rats are more susceptible to predation when crossing unfamiliar open areas. Landscaped residential or industrial areas provide good habitat, as does riparian vegetation of riverbanks and streams. Where anticoagulant resistance is known or suspected, the use of first-generation anticoagulants should be avoided in favor of the second-generation anticoagulants or one of the non anticoagulant rodenticides like bromethalin or cholecalciferol. Trap at left is modified by fastening a piece of cardboard to expand its trigger size (traps with expanded treadles can also be purchased from several manufacturers). Other vegetable, melon, berry, and fruit crops occasionally suffer relatively minor damage when adjacent to infested habitat such as riparian vegetation. Control of roof rat damage in agriculture represents yet another scenario. If you have rats in your home, it's very important to do the job right the first time! I have seen dozens and dozens of cases of nightmare scenarios over many years, in which homeowners have paid pest control companies for a monthly contract that never ends. Females can breed year-round.
