To avoid rodent infestation, remove potential rodent food and water sources and store food for people and pets in sealed containers. Clear away debris and other material that rodents can hide in.  Safely clean up rodent droppings, urine and nesting areas, always wearing gloves and spraying material with disinfectant until thoroughly soaked before attempting to remove or clean.

They prefer to consume fruits (sometimes referred to as the “fruit rat” or “citrus rat”) and nuts, although roof rats are omnivorous and will feed on almost anything available to them. Look for fresh droppings. There are several other types of lethal traps, including the crocodile trap, which has teeth that close on the rat, and even gas chamber traps. One of the more common techniques for bait use is to place the bait formulation in a tamper proof rodent bait station that protects the bait from accidental exposure to non-target animals or people. They may try to sell you poison stations for exterior rat control, however the rats only find their way back into your attic or walls to die. They can often be seen at night running along overhead utility lines or fences. Rat densities (numbers of rats in a given area) are determined primarily by the suitability of the habitat—the amount of available nutritional and palatable food and nearby protective cover (shelter or harborage). The food habits of roof rats outdoors in some respects resemble those of tree squirrels, since they prefer a wide variety of fruit and nuts. The whiskers and guard hairs enable the animals to travel adjacent to walls in the dark and in burrows. However, they may sometimes also build nests in burrows. In the third week they begin to take solid food. At least in some parts of the United States and elsewhere in the world, the methods used to control rats have reduced Norway rat populations but have permitted roof rats to become more prominent, apparently because they are more difficult to control.

Lights (flashing or continuously on) may repel rats at first, but rats will quickly acclimate to them. Norway rats can climb, but not as well as roof rats, and are strong swimmers. The Norway rat produces six to eight litters of six to nine young per year. Mice can enter an opening as small as 3/8" wide. In food-processing and storage facilities, they will feed on nearly all food items, though their food preferences may differ from those of Norway rats. The fumigation of structures, truck trailers, or rail cars should only be done by a licensed pest control operator who is trained in fumigation techniques. I'm not going to go into detail about harnesses and chicken ladders and such, but be careful! Then, when in the attic, wear a respirator - you don't want to breathe in fiberglass insulation, dust or mold, or the variety of diseases associated with rats. They are often found living on the second floor of a warehouse in which Norway rats occupy the first or basement floor. Rats have been plaguing humans for centuries, famous for their continuously-growing sharp teeth, their desire for human food, their tendency to get into homes and buildings and create nests and their health problems - rats are the essence of a pest.
