how long do rats live in captivity

Rodent entry elimination: We see many attempts by handymen, pest control companies, and Oakland County, Michigan rodent extraction companies that do not include the removal of any roofing material. Often the prevention includes the emptying of a can of foam into the void. Without the removal of roofing material, there is no assurance that rodent entry will be eliminated. When we encounter these substandard attempts, we must first remove the previous application.  When this includes foam, the extraction of the foam takes longer than the application of our wire prevention product.

Rodent elimination by those who are not insured exposes you, the Oakland County, Michigan homeowner, to unnecessary liabilities. It is in your best interest to request proof of insurance for worker’s compensation and public liability before work begins on your roof. It’s doubtful that you will find these companies or individuals carry such insurance.  Those who do not often work in this environment typically cannot afford expensive roofing insurance.

By this time they have learned what is good to eat by experimenting with potential food items and by imitating their mother. Roof Rats can enter homes and other structures through openings as small as ½ inch. This is why traps and bait stations may be avoided for a day or two. Dense shrubbery, vine-covered trees and fences, and vine ground cover make ideal harborage for roof rats. Droppings - Roof Rat droppings are 1/4 to 1/2 inch in length, capsule shaped, with blunt ends. For example, only zinc phosphide can be applied on the ground to control rats in sugarcane or macadamia orchards, and the second-generation anticoagulants, cholecalciferol and bromethalin, can be used only in and around buildings, not around crops or away from buildings even in non crop situations. Therefore, the body oils on a rat’s fur gets deposited on corners and edges of walls and around holes and gaps they use to enter into a wall void. They prefer gnawing on wood but may also damage property, electrical wiring, and food packaging. At about 3 months of age they are completely independent of the mother and are reproductively mature. In most instances, rats are very wary. Becomes sexually mature between two and five months, producing four to six litters per year that consist of six to eight young each.

They use their keen sense of smell to locate and select food items, identify territories and travel routes, and recognize other rats, especially those of the opposite sex. Roof rats frequently enter buildings from the roof or from accesses near overhead utility lines, which they use to travel from area to area. Also, carry out a visual examination of the attic to find the holes they were using to get in and out of the attic. They have coarse, brown fur, with lighter fur on the undersides. Rat guards are not without problems, however, because they may fray the insulation and cause short circuits. These rats are nocturnal and are excellent climbers. In situations where rats are not controlled with conventional products, fumigation of transport vehicles or rat ground burrows may sometimes be needed. While they may not kill the stalk outright, secondary organisms generally invade and reduce the sugar quality. Females can breed year-round. The preferred habitat of Norway rats is just about anywhere people reside. I highly recommend snap traps, not live cage traps, certainly not glue boards, and most definitely not poison! Never poison rats, it doesn't solve the problem and it just creates more problems.

Never poison rats, it doesn't solve the problem and it just creates more problems. Once you are confident that you have caught all of the rats that are in the attic, then it will be time to check for any insulation or wires in the attic that need to be replaced, and for any nesting material to remove, and feces to clean up. Between 9 and 14 days, their eyes open, and they begin to explore for food and move about near their nest. POISON IS A HORRIBLE IDEA FOR MANY MANY REASONS - poison won't solve the problem, and it'll just create more problems. The food habits of roof rats outdoors in some respects resemble those of tree squirrels, since they prefer a wide variety of fruit and nuts. Control methods must reflect an understanding of the roof rat’s habitat requirements, reproductive capabilities, food habits, life history, behavior, senses, movements, and the dynamics of its population structure. This is a great supplementary treatment to trapping when you are dealing with larger rodent populations, or for outdoor populations.
