If you have rats in your home, it's very important to do the job right the first time! I have seen dozens and dozens of cases of nightmare scenarios over many years, in which homeowners have paid pest control companies for a monthly contract that never ends. Once you're satisfied that there is no more evidence of rats, and you are not trapping any new rats, you should clean the attic or whatever area they were living in, to remove the contamination and biohazard, and also to eliminate the rat scent, which will attract new rats to try to chew their way into the house in the future. There's nothing fun about finding rats around your home or property. They may also enter through ill-fitted doors, windows, or screens, and air vents that are not in sound or working order. Pelleted or loose cereal anticoagulant baits are used extensively in tamper-resistant bait boxes or stations for a permanent baiting program for Norway rats and house mice. While you will not reasonably be able to compensate for every possible rodent entry, you can greatly reduce the ease of entry for rodents (and thereby, reduce the population size) by taking the following measures: Keeping vegetation thinned out or removed from the perimeter of buildings. The efficacy of such products for rats is generally lacking. This type of rat control service does not ever solve the problem. Their tails are longer than the rest of their body and are uniformly dark colored. Trapping is the preferred method of indoor control. Both roof rats and Norway rats have a well-developed sense of smell and are wary of new things that are introduced into their home range. Droppings Rats produce a lot of feces and the presence of their fecal droppings is a surefire way to spot an infestation. Roof rats have hairless, scaly tails that are longer than their heads and bodies. The advantages of trapping when compared to baiting include: 1) Trapping does not require the use of harmful poisons; 2) Trapping allows the user to know whether the rat was killed, whereas with baiting the rat will wander off and die somewhere else; 3) Trapping eliminates odor problems by allowing you to dispose of the rat carcass.

In urban settings, cats and owls prey on roof rats but have little if any effect on well-established populations. The reproductive potential of one female Norway rat is about 50-60 young per year. Just like Norway rats, roof rats destroy far more foodstuffs by contamination from feces and urine than from consumption. The 5 to 8 young in the litter develop rapidly, growing hair within a week. In sugarcane, they move into the field as the cane matures and feed on the cane stalks.

All openings greater than 1/4" should be sealed to exclude mice. Rodents sniff out the bait and return to feed upon it continuously until the poison kills them. Most of the states in the US interior are free of roof rats, but isolated infestations, probably stemming from infested cargo shipments, can occur. Observation Rats are not usually seen during the day unless disturbed from their protective harborage or because of intolerable competition from other rats. Rats can also transmit rat bite fever through bacteria in their mouth. Roof rats are adept climbers and not surprisingly are apt to build their nests in locations above ground. Like the Norway rat, the roof rat is implicated in the transmission of a number of diseases to humans, including murine typhus, leptospirosis, salmonellosis (food poisoning), rat-bite fever, and plague. These can be identified by the brown smudges of grease that comes from the rat's fur, and should all be sealed to prevent future rat infestations in the attic. Should Norway rats infest a structure, they most likely will live in the basement or ground floor.
