To avoid rodent infestation, remove potential rodent food and water sources and store food for people and pets in sealed containers. Clear away debris and other material that rodents can hide in.  Safely clean up rodent droppings, urine and nesting areas, always wearing gloves and spraying material with disinfectant until thoroughly soaked before attempting to remove or clean.

Since none of these are anticoagulants, all can be used to control anticoagulant resistant populations of roof rats. These rodents have been known to consume tree bark, meat and grain. Killing the rats may not be the best answer (it is not as simple as just exterminating them all) . Most commercial baits are registered for both species of rats and for house mice, but often they are less acceptable to roof rats than to the other species. Various sounds that indicate rodent activity include gnawing, scratching, and digging noises. Rat droppings are small, dark, cylindrically shaped, and are about one-half inch to three-fourths inch long with blunt ends. Rats may live up to three years, but a lifespan of one and a half years is more common. Trapping is the preferred method of indoor control.

A few instances of first-generation anticoagulant resistance have been reported in roof rats; although not common, it may be underestimated because so few resistance studies have been conducted on this species. At least in some parts of the United States and elsewhere in the world, the methods used to control rats have reduced Norway rat populations but have permitted roof rats to become more prominent, apparently because they are more difficult to control. Roof rats are adept climbers and not surprisingly are apt to build their nests in locations above ground. Urine Stains & Odors - Rodent urine deposited on rodent runways appear as a line of fine drops or streaks under an ultraviolet flashlight, or black light tool. However, the complexity in mode of action of newer materials makes these classifications outdated. In tree crops, some cultural practices can be helpful. Nests and Burrows - check behind shelves, boxes, behind the fridge, anywhere that a rat might like to use as a hiding space. Trichinosis may be contracted through eating undercooked meat of animals that have fed on rats. The smallest imperfections during the construction and roofing of a home can lead to a rat infestation. Because of the diseases they can carry, you should also check up on the equipment that you will need to safely trap the rats without any risk to your health. Roof Rats can enter homes and other structures through openings as small as ½ inch.

The traditional style snap traps are still among the best ways of dealing with a rat problem, and these are simple to set and bait, and you should look to place them in areas where the rats are active, so where you can see feces and smudges on the walls. The food habits of roof rats outdoors in some respects resemble those of tree squirrels, since they prefer a wide variety of fruit and nuts. Products sold as general animal repellents, based on taste and/or odor, are sometimes advertised to repel animals, including rats, from garbage bags. That is not the case! They sleep in your attic all day, and then at dusk they wake up, and start moving around, and that's why you hear them after dark. Once you know the location of the rats, you can set traps or place bait. Such caches may be found in a dismantled wood pile, attic, or behind boxes in a garage. Some of their habitats include garbage dumps, sewers and fields. Rats can also transmit rat bite fever through bacteria in their mouth. They do very well on feed provided for domestic animals such as swine, dairy cows, and chickens, as well as on dog and cat food. A rat does not want to be exposed to danger outside for very long! If you think you can just seal shut the entry holes into the house during the daylight when they are outside, that is incorrect. And most of all, you want someone who will do this complex work correctly.
