Rodent entry elimination: We see many attempts by handymen, pest control companies, and Ingham County, Michigan rodent extraction companies that do not include the removal of any roofing material. Often the prevention includes the emptying of a can of foam into the void. Without the removal of roofing material, there is no assurance that rodent entry will be eliminated. When we encounter these substandard attempts, we must first remove the previous application.  When this includes foam, the extraction of the foam takes longer than the application of our wire prevention product.

Rodent elimination by those who are not insured exposes you, the Ingham County, Michigan homeowner, to unnecessary liabilities. It is in your best interest to request proof of insurance for worker’s compensation and public liability before work begins on your roof. It’s doubtful that you will find these companies or individuals carry such insurance.  Those who do not often work in this environment typically cannot afford expensive roofing insurance.

Traps may be nailed to beams or studs and secured to pipes with wires. Norway rats are also polygamous and form colonies of many males and females. In tree crops, some cultural practices can be helpful. Because of the diseases they can carry, you should also check up on the equipment that you will need to safely trap the rats without any risk to your health. Rats can squeeze into a hole the size of a quarter. Trap at left is modified by fastening a piece of cardboard to expand its trigger size (traps with expanded treadles can also be purchased from several manufacturers). Mating generally peaks in the warmer months of the year, but may occur year round in some areas. Roof rats can be carriers of diseases. Adults range in weight from about 5-10 ounces. The social behavior of free-living roof rats is very difficult to study and, as a result, has received less attention than that of Norway rats. Some of the more important non-chemical methods are:

The roof rat is more at home in warm climates, and apparently less adaptable, than the Norway rat, which is why it has not spread throughout the country. Scientists have noted that the roof rat’s long tail is adapted to enhance their ability to climb and functions to assists them in balancing.

Presently, only one such modified trap is commercially available. Remove pre harvest fruits or nuts that drop in backyards. POISON IS A HORRIBLE IDEA FOR MANY MANY REASONS - poison won't solve the problem, and it'll just create more problems. They can transmit these diseases through physical contact, bites, by contamination or by fleas that are feeding on the rodent. In some situations in which the rats have been eliminated, cats that are good hunters may prevent reinfestation. Check the traps periodically, remove any dead trapped rats, and reset the traps. They can often be seen at night running along overhead utility lines or fences. As mentioned above, roof rats prefer above ground nesting locations in shrubs, trees, and dense vegetation.
