Rodent entry elimination: We see many attempts by handymen, pest control companies, and Oakland County, Michigan rodent extraction companies that do not include the removal of any roofing material. Often the prevention includes the emptying of a can of foam into the void. Without the removal of roofing material, there is no assurance that rodent entry will be eliminated. When we encounter these substandard attempts, we must first remove the previous application.  When this includes foam, the extraction of the foam takes longer than the application of our wire prevention product.

Rodent elimination by those who are not insured exposes you, the Oakland County, Michigan homeowner, to unnecessary liabilities. It is in your best interest to request proof of insurance for worker’s compensation and public liability before work begins on your roof. It’s doubtful that you will find these companies or individuals carry such insurance.  Those who do not often work in this environment typically cannot afford expensive roofing insurance.

In tree crops, some cultural practices can be helpful. Although roof rats have not yet been connected to HPS, everyone is advised to use caution when dealing with an infestation. Tracking powders can be placed in voids behind walls, near points of entry, and in well-defined trails. Droppings Rats produce a lot of feces and the presence of their fecal droppings is a surefire way to spot an infestation. Landscaped residential or industrial areas provide good habitat, as does riparian vegetation of riverbanks and streams. Becomes sexually mature between two and five months, producing four to six litters per year that consist of six to eight young each. That is very costly! Do the job ONCE by a wildlife operator, NOT A PEST CONTROL COMPANY, get it done, and you'll be rat-free forever. In dense populations, roof rats will establish a social hierarchy, wherein dominant males mate more than subordinate males. In residences where rats may be living in the attic and feeding outdoors, the damage may be restricted to tearing up insulation for nesting or gnawing electrical wiring. Adult roof rats usually live about one year. Other rat signs may also assist, but be aware that both species may be present.

Read my comprehensive guide to rats in the attic. The common wooden snap traps that are effective for Norway rats are effective for roof rats. Most commercial baits are registered for both species of rats and for house mice, but often they are less acceptable to roof rats than to the other species. Killing the rats may not be the best answer (it is not as simple as just exterminating them all) . Tracking powders can be placed in voids behind walls, near points of entry, and in well-defined trails. However, a few differences must be taken into account. Norway rats are also polygamous and form colonies of many males and females. Your inspection process must include ladder work and climbing on a roof. The food habits of roof rats outdoors in some respects resemble those of tree squirrels, since they prefer a wide variety of fruit and nuts. Pesticides must be registered for rat control by federal and/or state authorities and used in accordance with label directions. Such caches may be found in a dismantled wood pile, attic, or behind boxes in a garage.

Distinctions must be made as to which rodenticide (registered product) to use, the method of application or placement, and the amount of bait to apply. They are usually a shiny black, but may vary according to diet. Its worldwide geographic distribution suggests that it is much more suited to tropical and semitropical climates. These devices must be viewed with considerable skepticism, because research has not proven them effective. For further information see Norway Rats. However, when a Norway rat population grows so large that competition from other rats for food, water and harborage increases, some members of the rat community may seek to find new areas to colonize during the daytime. Monitor the situation. In some situations, pet food and poorly managed garbage may represent a major food resource.
