These kill traps are often baited with whole nuts and are most useful in trapping rats in trees. Trichinosis may be contracted through eating undercooked meat of animals that have fed on rats. This means there are no more rats to feed on it because they are dead. Scratching sounds - if you hear gnawing and the sounds of scampering in the walls or around the house you might have rats. The commercially available, expanded plastic treadle traps, such as the Victor Professional Rat Trap, are particularly effective if properly located in well-traveled paths. Read more about where rats live. I highly recommend snap traps, not live cage traps, certainly not glue boards, and most definitely not poison! Never poison rats, it doesn't solve the problem and it just creates more problems. In controlling roof rats with rodenticides, a sharp distinction must be made between control in and around buildings and control away from buildings such as in landfills and dumps, along drainage ditches and streams, in sewer water evaporation ponds, and in parks. Indoor nests usually are constructed in insulation such as in attics. They may not be effective on roof rats, however, because of their usual placement. At birth they are hairless, and their eyes are closed. Just like Norway rats, roof rats destroy far more foodstuffs by contamination from feces and urine than from consumption. You might find holes in walls and wood. Also, Norway rats may prey upon fish, poultry, mice, birds, small reptiles and amphibians. Trim all tree branches to further prevent entry.

Norway rats are common around human residences and industrial and commercial areas. Females can breed year-round. Other rodenticides. Also, Norway rats may prey upon fish, poultry, mice, birds, small reptiles and amphibians. Having completed the repairs to wires, and possibly vacuumed feces or replaced insulation (not usually necessary) fumigate the attic to kill any remaining parasites or spores from the rats. Avoid using poison and glue traps, as these are inhumane and cause more problems than they solve. Mice can enter an opening as small as 3/8" wide. Successful long-term rat control is not simple. Bait blocks are easy to place in small areas and difficult-to-reach locations out of the way of children, pets, and nontarget species. Roof rats can be controlled with the same baits used for Norway rats. A few baits are strong enough to cause death with a single feeding.
