Wild rodents can cause home damage, contaminate food, and cause illness in people and pets.  Rodent infestations are more likely to occur when events, such as flooding, displace them. To avoid rodent infestation, remove potential rodent food and water sources and store food for people and pets in sealed containers. Clear away debris and other material that rodents can hide in.  Safely clean up rodent droppings, urine and nesting areas, always wearing gloves and spraying material with disinfectant until thoroughly soaked before attempting to remove or clean.

Please also read the section on Sanitation, as it is an important consideration in rodent control. Within a population, some rats will be easy to control, some difficult. Most pest control companies set rat traps, perhaps squirt some flammable expansion foam at very obvious holes, and then put you on a monthly service to remove the rats that are still getting in to your home. You will never solve a rat problem until you find all of these openings, and seal them shut with steel, which rats are unable to chew through. If you have rats in your home, it's very important to do the job right the first time! I have seen dozens and dozens of cases of nightmare scenarios over many years, in which homeowners have paid pest control companies for a monthly contract that never ends. Roof rats are found in more temperate climates, since they do not do well in cooler temperatures. They are sometimes found living in rice fields or around poultry or other farm buildings as well as in industrial sites where food and shelter are available. Trap at left is modified by fastening a piece of cardboard to expand its trigger size (traps with expanded treadles can also be purchased from several manufacturers).

Disturbances such as habitat modifications should be avoided until the population is under control. Check the repairs you've done, to make sure no new areas have been chewed open. Floor drains and sewer pipes should have tight-fitting grates with openings less than 1/4 inch in diameter. Gnaw Marks Rat need to chew and gnaw on wood, plastic and other hard surfaces in order to keep their teeth chiseled down. Since roof rats rarely dig burrows, burrow fumigants are of limited use; however, if they have constructed burrows, then fumigants that are effective on Norway rats, such as aluminum phosphide and gas cartridges, will be effective on roof rats. Generally, a few more feedings are necessary to produce death with the first-generation anticoagulants (warfarin, pindone, diphacinone, and chlorophacinone) but this is less significant with the second-generation anticoagulants (bromadiolone and brodifacoum). In controlling roof rats with rodenticides, a sharp distinction must be made between control in and around buildings and control away from buildings such as in landfills and dumps, along drainage ditches and streams, in sewer water evaporation ponds, and in parks. Rats that are captured should be humanely destroyed and not released elsewhere because of their role in disease transmission, damage potential, and detrimental effect on native wildlife. Norway rats are a common mammalian pest of rice, but sometimes roof rats also feed on newly planted seed or the seedling as it emerges. The total cost will probably run between $300 - $500 to remove all the rats and seal the entry holes shut, and it may seem more up-front than a low monthly deal, but you've got to do it right, and then you won't have to worry about rats any more. The adequate inspection of a large facility for the presence and location of roof rats often requires a nighttime search when the facility is normally shut down.

Roof rats can be controlled with the same baits used for Norway rats. Rats usually begin searching for food shortly after sunset. They prefer to consume fruits (sometimes referred to as the “fruit rat” or “citrus rat”) and nuts, although roof rats are omnivorous and will feed on almost anything available to them. Trapping is the preferred method of indoor control. The more dominant individuals occupy the better habitats and feed whenever they like, whereas the less fortunate individuals may have to occupy marginal habitat and feed when the more dominant rats are not present. In tropical or semi tropical regions, the season may be nearly year-round. If roof rats are seen exposed, it often indicates their hiding spaces are all filled by other rats or that they have been disturbed, such as by construction. Bubonic plague was a scourge in Europe several times throughout history. Statisticians estimate that rats destroy 20 percent of the world's food supply every year by feeding, and indirectly through contamination. Distinctions must be made as to which rodenticide (registered product) to use, the method of application or placement, and the amount of bait to apply. Setting a trap to collect a few specimens may be the only sure way to identify the rat or rats involved.
