Rodent entry elimination: We see many attempts by handymen, pest control companies, and Washtenaw County, Michigan rodent extraction companies that do not include the removal of any roofing material. Often the prevention includes the emptying of a can of foam into the void. Without the removal of roofing material, there is no assurance that rodent entry will be eliminated. When we encounter these substandard attempts, we must first remove the previous application.  When this includes foam, the extraction of the foam takes longer than the application of our wire prevention product.

Rodent elimination by those who are not insured exposes you, the Washtenaw County, Michigan homeowner, to unnecessary liabilities. It is in your best interest to request proof of insurance for worker’s compensation and public liability before work begins on your roof. It’s doubtful that you will find these companies or individuals carry such insurance.  Those who do not often work in this environment typically cannot afford expensive roofing insurance.

Trichinosis may be contracted through eating undercooked meat of animals that have fed on rats. Rats leave the attic during the night, to go out and forage for water and food. The whiskers and guard hairs enable the animals to travel adjacent to walls in the dark and in burrows. Look for fresh droppings. Within a year, one female may be responsible for up to 40 new rodents. Indoors, runways appear as clean paths through dust or dirt. I highly recommend snap traps, not live cage traps, certainly not glue boards, and most definitely not poison! Never poison rats, it doesn't solve the problem and it just creates more problems. In residences where rats may be living in the attic and feeding outdoors, the damage may be restricted to tearing up insulation for nesting or gnawing electrical wiring. Rats are easier to exclude than mice because rats a typically larger. They are usually a shiny black, but may vary according to diet. The most common rat in the area is the Norway rat.

And most of all, you want someone who will do this complex work correctly. Sounds in the attic are often the first indication of the presence of roof rats in a residence. The young may continue to nurse until 4 or 5 weeks old. Rats are responsible for the spread of many diseases. Avoid using poison and glue traps, as these are inhumane and cause more problems than they solve. Also, Norway rats may prey upon fish, poultry, mice, birds, small reptiles and amphibians. In most instances, rats are very wary. For rats, all openings greater than 1/2" should be sealed. As mentioned above, roof rats prefer above ground nesting locations in shrubs, trees, and dense vegetation. Within a population, some rats will be easy to control, some difficult. By this time they have learned what is good to eat by experimenting with potential food items and by imitating their mother.

Roof rats frequently enter buildings from the roof or from accesses near overhead utility lines, which they use to travel from area to area. Care must be exercised to ensure that baits are properly placed and the use instructions on the product’s label are strictly followed. Their use for roof rats is limited to control within structures because roof rats rarely produce burrows. Tracking powders are used much less often for roof rats than for Norway rats because roof rats frequent overhead areas within buildings. A rat does not want to be exposed to danger outside for very long! If you think you can just seal shut the entry holes into the house during the daylight when they are outside, that is incorrect. From causing plague epidemics (the "Black Death" of Europe) to rat-bite fever, whether feeding on stored grain or gnawing electric wires, rats are enemies of humankind. Roof Rats are predominate in coastal areas. These diseases often share similar symptoms, and medical professionals must perform the proper diagnoses.
