Rodent entry elimination: We see many attempts by handymen, pest control companies, and Genesee County, Michigan rodent extraction companies that do not include the removal of any roofing material. Often the prevention includes the emptying of a can of foam into the void. Without the removal of roofing material, there is no assurance that rodent entry will be eliminated. When we encounter these substandard attempts, we must first remove the previous application.  When this includes foam, the extraction of the foam takes longer than the application of our wire prevention product.

Rodent elimination by those who are not insured exposes you, the Genesee County, Michigan homeowner, to unnecessary liabilities. It is in your best interest to request proof of insurance for worker’s compensation and public liability before work begins on your roof. It’s doubtful that you will find these companies or individuals carry such insurance.  Those who do not often work in this environment typically cannot afford expensive roofing insurance.

The roof rat is more at home in warm climates, and apparently less adaptable, than the Norway rat, which is why it has not spread throughout the country. You hear the scratching rodents in your attic at night, correct? So you might assume that the rats are entering your attic at night. The reproductive potential of one female Norway rat is about 50-60 young per year. They can transmit these diseases through physical contact, bites, by contamination or by fleas that are feeding on the rodent. Norway rats are common around human residences and industrial and commercial areas. Grease marks (from the oil and dirt of rats) often appear along walls next to runways. POISON IS A HORRIBLE IDEA FOR MANY MANY REASONS - poison won't solve the problem, and it'll just create more problems. It is recommended for use in homes because, unlike with poison baits, there is no risk of a rat dying in an inaccessible place and creating an odor problem. Elsewhere, reports indicate that roof rats are slowly disappearing from localized areas for no apparent reason. Rats may live up to three years, but a lifespan of one and a half years is more common. Roof rats are polygamous and group themselves into colonies of multiple males and females.

The commercially available, expanded plastic treadle traps, such as the Victor Professional Rat Trap, are particularly effective if properly located in well-traveled paths. They may eat vegetation, but prefer to meat or meat-related wastes. Bubonic plague was a scourge in Europe several times throughout history. While you are preventing future rat population growth through inspection, sanitation, and exclusion, you will also want to begin working towards elimination of the population that is already present through trapping and baiting. Use enough traps to eliminate the rodents quickly. Scratching sounds - if you hear gnawing and the sounds of scampering in the walls or around the house you might have rats. There are two basic methods of rat population reduction: Roof rats are highly adaptable. These rodents have been known to consume tree bark, meat and grain. They are usually a shiny black, but may vary according to diet. Tracking powders can be placed in voids behind walls, near points of entry, and in well-defined trails.

  • What are the types of rat snap traps?

Trapping is the preferred method of indoor control. Their presence is typically detected by the occurrence of their droppings, holes chewed into bags and containers, and chewed nesting materials. Young rats generally cannot be trapped until about 1 month old. Norway rats are usually active at dusk or during the night and are inactive during daylight hours. Use a powerful flashlight to spot rats and to determine travel routes for the best locations to set baits and traps. Norway rats and the roof rats are very different in their habits, habitats and behavior, so the first requirement of a rat treatment program is to correctly identify the rat and develop a treatment plan that works for that species. Having completed the repairs to wires, and possibly vacuumed feces or replaced insulation (not usually necessary) fumigate the attic to kill any remaining parasites or spores from the rats. It has often been said that Norway rats will displace roof rats whenever they come together, but the evidence is not altogether convincing.
