To avoid rodent infestation, remove potential rodent food and water sources and store food for people and pets in sealed containers. Clear away debris and other material that rodents can hide in.  Safely clean up rodent droppings, urine and nesting areas, always wearing gloves and spraying material with disinfectant until thoroughly soaked before attempting to remove or clean.

They often eat all the pulp from oranges while the fruit is still hanging on the tree, leaving only the empty rind. Some traps should be placed on the floor, but more should be placed above floor level (for example, on top of stacked commodities). Control methods must reflect an understanding of the roof rat’s habitat requirements, reproductive capabilities, food habits, life history, behavior, senses, movements, and the dynamics of its population structure. The common wooden snap traps that are effective for Norway rats are effective for roof rats. The ears and tail are nearly hairless and they are typically 12 to 18 inches long including the tail and weigh 10 to 16 ounces. At present there are three rodenticides—zinc phosphide, cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), and bromethalin—registered and available for roof rat control. Rats tend to segregate themselves socially in both space and time. Such caches may be found in a dismantled wood pile, attic, or behind boxes in a garage.

The wildlife operator will seal shut all the rat entry points, and that's the ONLY way to solve a rat problem forever. The young are able to breed before they are four months old. While rats can live in the walls, the kitchen, under the house, etc. the most common place for rats to inhabit in a house is the attic. Lives up to one year. The Norway rat is generally considered the most important rat in the United States. A control operation, therefore, must reduce numbers to a very low level; otherwise, rats will not only reproduce rapidly, but often quickly exceed their former density for a short period of time. METHOD OF CONTROL: First of all, mothballs or ammonia won't make them leave, nor will ultrasonic sound emitters or strobe lights. Floor drains and sewer pipes should have tight-fitting grates with openings less than 1/4 inch in diameter. Tracking powders are used much less often for roof rats than for Norway rats because roof rats frequent overhead areas within buildings. They do very well on feed provided for domestic animals such as swine, dairy cows, and chickens, as well as on dog and cat food. The great adaptability of rats to human-created environments and the high fertility rate of rats make for quick recuperation of their populations. Taste perception of rats is good; once rats locate food, the taste will determine their food preferences. The long, sensitive whiskers (vibrissae) near their nose and the guard hairs on their body are used as tactile sensors. Roof rats are susceptible to all of the various anticoagulant rodenticides, but less so than Norway rats. The smallest imperfections during the construction and roofing of a home can lead to a rat infestation.
