Wild rodents can cause home damage, contaminate food, and cause illness in people and pets.  Rodent infestations are more likely to occur when events, such as flooding, displace them. To avoid rodent infestation, remove potential rodent food and water sources and store food for people and pets in sealed containers. Clear away debris and other material that rodents can hide in.  Safely clean up rodent droppings, urine and nesting areas, always wearing gloves and spraying material with disinfectant until thoroughly soaked before attempting to remove or clean.

Rats leave the attic during the night, to go out and forage for water and food. Some traps should be placed on the floor, but more should be placed above floor level (for example, on top of stacked commodities). Eliminate vines growing on buildings and, when feasible, overhanging tree limbs that may be used as travel routes. Roof rats are adept climbers and not surprisingly are apt to build their nests in locations above ground. Roof rats leave a hind foot track of about 3/4-1 inch. Exclusion and sealing of sites greater than ½ inch (about the size of a dime) using screens, flashing, door sweeps and other materials to keep rats from entering a structure. Once you're satisfied that there is no more evidence of rats, and you are not trapping any new rats, you should clean the attic or whatever area they were living in, to remove the contamination and biohazard, and also to eliminate the rat scent, which will attract new rats to try to chew their way into the house in the future. Out-of-doors, roof rats may be present in low to moderate numbers with little sign in the way of tracks or droppings or runs and burrows.

The underside of the roof rat’s body is grayish to white. They need not be baited. A vegetation-free margin around the grove will slow rat invasions because rats are more susceptible to predation when crossing unfamiliar open areas. In some agricultural areas, roof rats cause significant losses of tree crops such as citrus and avocados and, to a lesser extent, walnuts, almonds, and other nuts. Presently, only one such modified trap is commercially available. Body is smaller and sleeker than the Norway rat’s. At least in some parts of the United States and elsewhere in the world, the methods used to control rats have reduced Norway rat populations but have permitted roof rats to become more prominent, apparently because they are more difficult to control. Most pest control companies set rat traps, perhaps squirt some flammable expansion foam at very obvious holes, and then put you on a monthly service to remove the rats that are still getting in to your home. Since roof rats rarely dig burrows, burrow fumigants are of limited use; however, if they have constructed burrows, then fumigants that are effective on Norway rats, such as aluminum phosphide and gas cartridges, will be effective on roof rats. Roof rats range along the lower half of the East Coast and throughout the Gulf States upward into Arkansas. Use a powerful flashlight to spot rats and to determine travel routes for the best locations to set baits and traps.

Norway rats build their nests in underground burrows where they mate, rear their young, store food and seek refuge from predators. Most of the states in the US interior are free of roof rats, but isolated infestations, probably stemming from infested cargo shipments, can occur. Then they return to the attic. Touch is an important sense in rats. Trapping is an effective alternative to pesticides and recommended in some situations. Once you are confident that you have caught all of the rats that are in the attic, then it will be time to check for any insulation or wires in the attic that need to be replaced, and for any nesting material to remove, and feces to clean up. Adults range in weight from about 5-10 ounces. This is a great supplementary treatment to trapping when you are dealing with larger rodent populations, or for outdoor populations. Snails are a favorite food, but don’t expect roof rats to eliminate a garden snail problem.
