Rodent entry elimination: We see many attempts by handymen, pest control companies, and Oakland County, Michigan rodent extraction companies that do not include the removal of any roofing material. Often the prevention includes the emptying of a can of foam into the void. Without the removal of roofing material, there is no assurance that rodent entry will be eliminated. When we encounter these substandard attempts, we must first remove the previous application.  When this includes foam, the extraction of the foam takes longer than the application of our wire prevention product.

Rodent elimination by those who are not insured exposes you, the Oakland County, Michigan homeowner, to unnecessary liabilities. It is in your best interest to request proof of insurance for worker’s compensation and public liability before work begins on your roof. It’s doubtful that you will find these companies or individuals carry such insurance.  Those who do not often work in this environment typically cannot afford expensive roofing insurance.

Rats are easier to exclude than mice because rats a typically larger. The whiskers and guard hairs enable the animals to travel adjacent to walls in the dark and in burrows. Most of the states in the US interior are free of roof rats, but isolated infestations, probably stemming from infested cargo shipments, can occur. Other vegetable, melon, berry, and fruit crops occasionally suffer relatively minor damage when adjacent to infested habitat such as riparian vegetation. The 5 to 8 young in the litter develop rapidly, growing hair within a week. Just like Norway rats, roof rats destroy far more foodstuffs by contamination from feces and urine than from consumption. Selection of rodenticides and bait products must be done according to label instructions. They prefer to consume fruits (sometimes referred to as the “fruit rat” or “citrus rat”) and nuts, although roof rats are omnivorous and will feed on almost anything available to them. Many rats may cache or hoard considerable amounts of solid food, which they eat later. If living under a refrigerator or freezer, they may disable the unit by gnawing the electrical wires. Indoors, runways appear as clean paths through dust or dirt.

  • Rat Droppings

Roof rats are not accomplished swimmers and are not usually found in sewers. That is very costly! Do the job ONCE by a wildlife operator, NOT A PEST CONTROL COMPANY, get it done, and you'll be rat-free forever. Other indicators can include grease marks along surfaces as well as nests. You will never solve a rat problem until you find all of these openings, and seal them shut with steel, which rats are unable to chew through. Rat droppings are small, dark, cylindrically shaped, and are about one-half inch to three-fourths inch long with blunt ends. In the third week they begin to take solid food. Disturbances such as habitat modifications should be avoided until the population is under control. Roof rats have a strong tendency to avoid new objects in their environment and this neophobia can influence control efforts, for it may take several days before they will approach a bait station or trap. Nests and Burrows - check behind shelves, boxes, behind the fridge, anywhere that a rat might like to use as a hiding space. The advantages of trapping when compared to baiting include: 1) Trapping does not require the use of harmful poisons; 2) Trapping allows the user to know whether the rat was killed, whereas with baiting the rat will wander off and die somewhere else; 3) Trapping eliminates odor problems by allowing you to dispose of the rat carcass. They are nocturnal by nature and are accomplished climbers.

In food-processing and storage facilities, they will feed on nearly all food items, though their food preferences may differ from those of Norway rats. Products sold as general animal repellents, based on taste and/or odor, are sometimes advertised to repel animals, including rats, from garbage bags. Mice can enter an opening as small as 3/8" wide. Eliminate vines growing on buildings and, when feasible, overhanging tree limbs that may be used as travel routes. There is less tendency to see droppings, urine, or tracks on the floor in buildings because rats may live overhead between floors, above false ceilings, or in utility spaces, and venture down to feed or obtain food. Gnaw Marks Rat need to chew and gnaw on wood, plastic and other hard surfaces in order to keep their teeth chiseled down. If living under a refrigerator or freezer, they may disable the unit by gnawing the electrical wires. Rats are responsible for the spread of many diseases.
