Wild rodents can cause home damage, contaminate food, and cause illness in people and pets.  Rodent infestations are more likely to occur when events, such as flooding, displace them. To avoid rodent infestation, remove potential rodent food and water sources and store food for people and pets in sealed containers. Clear away debris and other material that rodents can hide in.  Safely clean up rodent droppings, urine and nesting areas, always wearing gloves and spraying material with disinfectant until thoroughly soaked before attempting to remove or clean.

In landscaped yards they often live in overgrown shrubbery or vines, feeding on ornamentals, vegetables, fruits, and nuts. The young are able to breed before they are four months old. Rat droppings are small, dark, cylindrically shaped, and are about one-half inch to three-fourths inch long with blunt ends. Check the traps periodically, remove any dead trapped rats, and reset the traps. Rat guards are not without problems, however, because they may fray the insulation and cause short circuits.

This is a great supplementary treatment to trapping when you are dealing with larger rodent populations, or for outdoor populations. In food-processing and storage facilities, they will feed on nearly all food items, though their food preferences may differ from those of Norway rats. Mice can enter an opening as small as 3/8" wide. Glue boards will catch roof rats, but, like traps, they must be located on beams, rafters, and along other travel routes, making them more difficult to place effectively for roof rats than for Norway rats or house mice. Rickettsial Diseases - various forms of Typhus fall into this category and can also be carried by rat-borne parasites. Where label instructions permit, small blocks can be placed or fastened on rafters, ledges, or even attached to tree limbs, where they are readily accessible to the arboreal rats. Roof rats entering homes are generally found in raised or secure enclosures such as walls, cabinets, attics, and false ceilings. The latter two were ineffective for roof rats. Pelleted or loose cereal anticoagulant baits are used extensively in tamper-resistant bait boxes or stations for a permanent baiting program for Norway rats and house mice. Norway rats are common around human residences and industrial and commercial areas. That is very costly! Do the job ONCE by a wildlife operator, NOT A PEST CONTROL COMPANY, get it done, and you'll be rat-free forever.
