To avoid rodent infestation, remove potential rodent food and water sources and store food for people and pets in sealed containers. Clear away debris and other material that rodents can hide in.  Safely clean up rodent droppings, urine and nesting areas, always wearing gloves and spraying material with disinfectant until thoroughly soaked before attempting to remove or clean.

Do the job ONCE by a wildlife operator, NOT A PEST CONTROL COMPANY, get it done, and you'll be rat-free forever. Remove pre harvest fruits or nuts that drop in backyards. Rat densities (numbers of rats in a given area) are determined primarily by the suitability of the habitat—the amount of available nutritional and palatable food and nearby protective cover (shelter or harborage). Eliminate vines growing on buildings and, when feasible, overhanging tree limbs that may be used as travel routes. Traps should be placed flush with walls in areas of highest travel (as determined by Inspection). Killing the rats may not be the best answer (it is not as simple as just exterminating them all) . When everyone is asleep and the house is quiet, the rats can be heard scurrying about. Resistance is of little consequence in the control of roof rats, especially with the newer rodenticides presently available. If you're not experienced in setting them, you may have some problems, so be careful. Roof rats can also enter openings in walls, eaves and roof from the branches of trees. Roof rats range along the lower half of the East Coast and throughout the Gulf States upward into Arkansas. Roof rats are highly adaptable. In food-processing and food-storage facilities, roof rats do about the same type of damage as Norway rats, and damage is visually hard to differentiate. Female adults will produce about seven litters per year and will mate again about 18 hours after giving birth to her litter of about eight pups. In some agricultural areas, roof rats cause significant losses of tree crops such as citrus and avocados and, to a lesser extent, walnuts, almonds, and other nuts. It is recommended for use in homes because, unlike with poison baits, there is no risk of a rat dying in an inaccessible place and creating an odor problem. It actually makes it worse, because the rats are multiplying, dying, defecating, destroying insulation, chewing wires and chewing air ducts, while you wait for your next service.

Setting a trap to collect a few specimens may be the only sure way to identify the rat or rats involved. Generally, Roof rats stay within 100 miles inland. Some of the more important diseases associated with rats include Rat-Bite Fever and Leptospirosis. These rats are nocturnal and are excellent climbers. Having completed the repairs to wires, and possibly vacuumed feces or replaced insulation (not usually necessary) fumigate the attic to kill any remaining parasites or spores from the rats. Mating generally peaks in the warmer months of the year, but may occur year round in some areas. Rat guards are not without problems, however, because they may fray the insulation and cause short circuits. Indoor nests usually are constructed in insulation such as in attics. Roof rats will often move into sugarcane and citrus groves. These rodents have been known to consume tree bark, meat and grain. Emphasis should be placed on the removal of as much harborage as is practical.
