Snails are a favorite food, but don’t expect roof rats to eliminate a garden snail problem. Sounds Noises produced by scurrying rats, scratching in the walls or other noises from nest building may tip off the property owner to a rat problem. Norway rats are also omnivores and will eat just about anything that is found near where humans discard food. Also, roof rats are likely to consume insects. Roof Rats can enter homes and other structures through openings as small as ½ inch. Rodenticides were once categorized as acute (single-dose) or chronic (multiple dose) toxicants. The social behavior of free-living roof rats is very difficult to study and, as a result, has received less attention than that of Norway rats. Roof rats prefer to nest in locations off of the ground and rarely dig burrows for living quarters if off-the-ground sites exist. The adequate inspection of a large facility for the presence and location of roof rats often requires a nighttime search when the facility is normally shut down.

The young may continue to nurse until 4 or 5 weeks old. However, when a Norway rat population grows so large that competition from other rats for food, water and harborage increases, some members of the rat community may seek to find new areas to colonize during the daytime.
