Oakland County, Michigan Rat Control Services

where rats live

Rodent entry elimination: We see many attempts by handymen, pest control companies, and Oakland County, Michigan rodent extraction companies that do not include the removal of any roofing material. Often the prevention includes the emptying of a can of foam into the void. Without the removal of roofing material, there is no assurance that rodent entry will be eliminated. When we encounter these substandard attempts, we must first remove the previous application.  When this includes foam, the extraction of the foam takes longer than the application of our wire prevention product.

Rodent elimination by those who are not insured exposes you, the Oakland County, Michigan homeowner, to unnecessary liabilities. It is in your best interest to request proof of insurance for worker’s compensation and public liability before work begins on your roof. It’s doubtful that you will find these companies or individuals carry such insurance.  Those who do not often work in this environment typically cannot afford expensive roofing insurance.

Information on Pack Rats and Roof Rats

  • Can Rats Chew Through Wires in a Car?

The latter two were ineffective for roof rats. They can transmit these diseases through physical contact, bites, by contamination or by fleas that are feeding on the rodent. The great adaptability of rats to human-created environments and the high fertility rate of rats make for quick recuperation of their populations. Another important treatment component is customer education so the customer understands the concepts of the proposed control program. Knowledge is limited on interspecific competition between the different genera and species of rats. Tracking powders play an important role in structural rodent control. Avoid using poison and glue traps, as these are inhumane and cause more problems than they solve. The product label is the law and dictates the product’s location of use and use patterns. When droppings are seen, it is a good practice to remove those droppings and later inspect to see whether new droppings were deposited. Some traps should be placed on the floor, but more should be placed above floor level (for example, on top of stacked commodities). Your inspection process must include ladder work and climbing on a roof.

Caution should be taken to avoid trapping nontarget species such as tree squirrels. Unfortunately, the rat’s great adaptability to varying environmental conditions can sometimes make this information elusive. Norway rats are also omnivores and will eat just about anything that is found near where humans discard food. Lives up to one year. Exclusion and sealing of sites greater than ½ inch (about the size of a dime) using screens, flashing, door sweeps and other materials to keep rats from entering a structure. Eliminate vines growing on buildings and, when feasible, overhanging tree limbs that may be used as travel routes. Then the rats should be trapped and removed. These can be identified by the brown smudges of grease that comes from the rat's fur, and should all be sealed to prevent future rat infestations in the attic. Once established, they readily breed and thrive within buildings, just as Norway rats do. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome is transferred via inhalation of rodent urine, droppings or saliva. Roof rats are highly adaptable.

Rats leave the attic during the night, to go out and forage for water and food. Proper ladder safety is a must, as is roof safety. At about 3 months of age they are completely independent of the mother and are reproductively mature. Rat droppings are small, dark, cylindrically shaped, and are about one-half inch to three-fourths inch long with blunt ends. Roof rats can also enter openings in walls, eaves and roof from the branches of trees. Where label instructions permit, small blocks can be placed or fastened on rafters, ledges, or even attached to tree limbs, where they are readily accessible to the arboreal rats. Rats rely more on their keen senses of smell, taste, touch, and hearing than on vision. The product label is the law and dictates the product’s location of use and use patterns.
