Statisticians estimate that rats destroy 20 percent of the world's food supply every year by feeding, and indirectly through contamination. They prefer gnawing on wood but may also damage property, electrical wiring, and food packaging. The most common rat in the area is the Norway rat. Traditional baiting or trapping on the ground or floor may intercept very few roof rats unless bait and/or traps are placed at the very points that rats traverse from above to a food resource. Generally, Roof rats stay within 100 miles inland. Other rat signs may also assist, but be aware that both species may be present. Anticoagulants (slow-acting, chronic toxicants). It is best to contact pest management professionals for an inspection and evaluation.

A few instances of first-generation anticoagulant resistance have been reported in roof rats; although not common, it may be underestimated because so few resistance studies have been conducted on this species. Roof rat droppings are 12 to 13 mm with pointed ends, whereas Norway rat droppings are 18 to 20 mm and capsule shaped. Only construction grade materials are used. They move faster than Norway rats and are very agile climbers, which enables them to quickly escape predators. Breeding seasons vary in different areas. Newer rodenticides are much more efficacious and have resulted in the phasing out of these older materials over the last 20 years. At present there are three rodenticides—zinc phosphide, cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), and bromethalin—registered and available for roof rat control. The advantages of trapping when compared to baiting include: 1) Trapping does not require the use of harmful poisons; 2) Trapping allows the user to know whether the rat was killed, whereas with baiting the rat will wander off and die somewhere else; 3) Trapping eliminates odor problems by allowing you to dispose of the rat carcass. The common wooden snap traps that are effective for Norway rats are effective for roof rats. A few baits are strong enough to cause death with a single feeding. You can't ignore wildlife problems, because of the damage and health risks that rats cause.

Roof rats will often move into sugarcane and citrus groves. Some traps should be placed on the floor, but more should be placed above floor level (for example, on top of stacked commodities). Roof rats are found in more temperate climates, since they do not do well in cooler temperatures. Rats leave the attic during the night, to go out and forage for water and food. Liquid baits may be an effective alternative in situations where normal baits are not readily accepted, especially where water is scarce or where rats must travel some distance to reach water. Once you're satisfied that there is no more evidence of rats, and you are not trapping any new rats, you should clean the attic or whatever area they were living in, to remove the contamination and biohazard, and also to eliminate the rat scent, which will attract new rats to try to chew their way into the house in the future. The more dominant individuals occupy the better habitats and feed whenever they like, whereas the less fortunate individuals may have to occupy marginal habitat and feed when the more dominant rats are not present. Within a population, some rats will be easy to control, some difficult. Rub marks - rats get coated with dirt and they like to rub against the walls to find their way around a room’s perimeter, since they can't see so well. It actually makes it worse, because the rats are multiplying, dying, defecating, destroying insulation, chewing wires and chewing air ducts, while you wait for your next service. Rat droppings are small, dark, cylindrically shaped, and are about one-half inch to three-fourths inch long with blunt ends.
