To avoid rodent infestation, remove potential rodent food and water sources and store food for people and pets in sealed containers. Clear away debris and other material that rodents can hide in.  Safely clean up rodent droppings, urine and nesting areas, always wearing gloves and spraying material with disinfectant until thoroughly soaked before attempting to remove or clean.

They may not be effective on roof rats, however, because of their usual placement. PLEASE read my how to trap a rat guide for good tips and methods on proper rat trapping. Rats that are captured should be humanely destroyed and not released elsewhere because of their role in disease transmission, damage potential, and detrimental effect on native wildlife. In some situations, pet food and poorly managed garbage may represent a major food resource. They may live in the landscaping of one residence and feed at another. The smallest imperfections during the construction and roofing of a home can lead to a rat infestation. Rat densities (numbers of rats in a given area) are determined primarily by the suitability of the habitat—the amount of available nutritional and palatable food and nearby protective cover (shelter or harborage). Resistance is of little consequence in the control of roof rats, especially with the newer rodenticides presently available.

There are two basic methods of rat population reduction: The Norway rat produces six to eight litters of six to nine young per year. In landscaped yards they often live in overgrown shrubbery or vines, feeding on ornamentals, vegetables, fruits, and nuts. For a one-time fee, we trap and remove all rats, and identify and reconstruct all rat entry points. They are nocturnal by nature and are accomplished climbers. Care must be exercised to ensure that baits are properly placed and the use instructions on the product’s label are strictly followed. Tracking powders are used much less often for roof rats than for Norway rats because roof rats frequent overhead areas within buildings. Snails are a favorite food, but don’t expect roof rats to eliminate a garden snail problem. Scratching sounds - if you hear gnawing and the sounds of scampering in the walls or around the house you might have rats. Strip and destroy all unwanted fruit when the harvest period is over. The commercially available, expanded plastic treadle traps, such as the Victor Professional Rat Trap, are particularly effective if properly located in well-traveled paths.

Female adults will produce about seven litters per year and will mate again about 18 hours after giving birth to her litter of about eight pups. They are nocturnal by nature and are accomplished climbers. Females can breed year-round. Mating may occur year round in locations where the environmental conditions are sufficient. All openings greater than 1/4" should be sealed to exclude mice. Exclusion and sealing of sites greater than ½ inch (about the size of a dime) using screens, flashing, door sweeps and other materials to keep rats from entering a structure. They also often chew on inedible materials such as books, soap, and cans. Products sold as general animal repellents, based on taste and/or odor, are sometimes advertised to repel animals, including rats, from garbage bags. Monitor the situation. Newer rodenticides are much more efficacious and have resulted in the phasing out of these older materials over the last 20 years. If roof rats are seen exposed, it often indicates their hiding spaces are all filled by other rats or that they have been disturbed, such as by construction.
