Wild rodents can cause home damage, contaminate food, and cause illness in people and pets.  Rodent infestations are more likely to occur when events, such as flooding, displace them. To avoid rodent infestation, remove potential rodent food and water sources and store food for people and pets in sealed containers. Clear away debris and other material that rodents can hide in.  Safely clean up rodent droppings, urine and nesting areas, always wearing gloves and spraying material with disinfectant until thoroughly soaked before attempting to remove or clean.

Also, be careful when setting snap traps. Then the rats should be trapped and removed. Traditional baiting or trapping on the ground or floor may intercept very few roof rats unless bait and/or traps are placed at the very points that rats traverse from above to a food resource. Norway rats are a common mammalian pest of rice, but sometimes roof rats also feed on newly planted seed or the seedling as it emerges. Prune to raise the skirts and remove any nests constructed in the trees. Droppings - Roof Rat droppings are 1/4 to 1/2 inch in length, capsule shaped, with blunt ends. Killing the rats may not be the best answer (it is not as simple as just exterminating them all) . However, the complexity in mode of action of newer materials makes these classifications outdated.

Also, be careful when setting snap traps. Norway rats are common around human residences and industrial and commercial areas. At birth they are hairless, and their eyes are closed. Pelleted or loose cereal anticoagulant baits are used extensively in tamper-resistant bait boxes or stations for a permanent baiting program for Norway rats and house mice. They do very well on feed provided for domestic animals such as swine, dairy cows, and chickens, as well as on dog and cat food. The underside of the roof rat’s body is grayish to white. Having completed the repairs to wires, and possibly vacuumed feces or replaced insulation (not usually necessary) fumigate the attic to kill any remaining parasites or spores from the rats. Without this knowledge, both time and money are wasted, and the chances of failure are increased. Roof rats are not accomplished swimmers and are not usually found in sewers. They are often found living on the second floor of a warehouse in which Norway rats occupy the first or basement floor. If you've sealed the house correctly, then you shouldn't trap any new rats after just the first three days. If roof rats are seen exposed, it often indicates their hiding spaces are all filled by other rats or that they have been disturbed, such as by construction. You will know the bait is working when the bait is no longer being consumed. Once you're satisfied that there is no more evidence of rats, and you are not trapping any new rats, you should clean the attic or whatever area they were living in, to remove the contamination and biohazard, and also to eliminate the rat scent, which will attract new rats to try to chew their way into the house in the future. The ears and tail are nearly hairless and they are typically 12 to 18 inches long including the tail and weigh 10 to 16 ounces. Dense shrubbery, vine-covered trees and fences, and vine ground cover make ideal harborage for roof rats. Only construction grade materials are used. However, rats are a nuisance animal wherever you choose to release them, and they also have a particularly low rate of survival once they have been relocated, so in most cases using humane lethal traps will be the best way to deal with the infestation. Trap at left is modified by fastening a piece of cardboard to expand its trigger size (traps with expanded treadles can also be purchased from several manufacturers). In food-processing and storage facilities, they will feed on nearly all food items, though their food preferences may differ from those of Norway rats. Resistance is of little consequence in the control of roof rats, especially with the newer rodenticides presently available.
