Rodent entry elimination: We see many attempts by handymen, pest control companies, and Ingham County, Michigan rodent extraction companies that do not include the removal of any roofing material. Often the prevention includes the emptying of a can of foam into the void. Without the removal of roofing material, there is no assurance that rodent entry will be eliminated. When we encounter these substandard attempts, we must first remove the previous application.  When this includes foam, the extraction of the foam takes longer than the application of our wire prevention product.

Rodent elimination by those who are not insured exposes you, the Ingham County, Michigan homeowner, to unnecessary liabilities. It is in your best interest to request proof of insurance for worker’s compensation and public liability before work begins on your roof. It’s doubtful that you will find these companies or individuals carry such insurance.  Those who do not often work in this environment typically cannot afford expensive roofing insurance.

Rat Proofing

There are two basic methods of rat population reduction: Traps may be nailed to beams or studs and secured to pipes with wires. A control operation, therefore, must reduce numbers to a very low level; otherwise, rats will not only reproduce rapidly, but often quickly exceed their former density for a short period of time. Then the rats should be trapped and removed. Rat removal expert’s rat control technicians are properly trained in how to get rid of rats and the elimination of rat problems using a variety of rat control techniques. They may be frightened by sound-producing devices for awhile but they become accustomed to constant and frequently repeated sounds quickly. Rodents sniff out the bait and return to feed upon it continuously until the poison kills them. As their name suggests, roof rats may be found in elevated areas such as trees, rafters, attics and roofs. Another important treatment component is customer education so the customer understands the concepts of the proposed control program. When necessary, roof rats will travel considerable distances (100 to 300 feet [30 to 90 m]) for food. Traditional baiting or trapping on the ground or floor may intercept very few roof rats unless bait and/or traps are placed at the very points that rats traverse from above to a food resource.

Sightings & Sounds - Since rodents are nocturnal and live secretively under normal circumstances, you can be sure that regular daytime rodent sightings indicate a heavy infestation. The adequate inspection of a large facility for the presence and location of roof rats often requires a nighttime search when the facility is normally shut down. As mentioned above, roof rats prefer above ground nesting locations in shrubs, trees, and dense vegetation. Norway rats are a common mammalian pest of rice, but sometimes roof rats also feed on newly planted seed or the seedling as it emerges. Their burrowing habitats include soil along building foundations, under woodpiles and other piles of debris. It is unlikely, however, they will be any more effective for roof rats than for Norway rats. It is best to contact pest management professionals for an inspection and evaluation. Once established, they readily breed and thrive within buildings, just as Norway rats do. Then the rats should be trapped and removed. Rat control requires an integrated approach that includes non-lethal tools such as careful inspections, upgraded sanitation, and rat-proofing structures. It is unlikely, however, they will be any more effective for roof rats than for Norway rats.

All anticoagulants provide excellent roof rat control when prepared in acceptable baits. Lethal control often combines the use of rodenticides with non-toxic control measures such as snap traps or glue boards. Indoors, runways appear as clean paths through dust or dirt. Roof rats are also food hoarders, stashing supplies of food such as seeds and nuts. They do very well on feed provided for domestic animals such as swine, dairy cows, and chickens, as well as on dog and cat food. Anticoagulants (slow-acting, chronic toxicants). That is very costly! Do the job ONCE by a wildlife operator, NOT A PEST CONTROL COMPANY, get it done, and you'll be rat-free forever. Rat Bite Fever - from the saliva of a rat, it comes from rats biting humans.
