Wild rodents can cause home damage, contaminate food, and cause illness in people and pets.  Rodent infestations are more likely to occur when events, such as flooding, displace them. To avoid rodent infestation, remove potential rodent food and water sources and store food for people and pets in sealed containers. Clear away debris and other material that rodents can hide in.  Safely clean up rodent droppings, urine and nesting areas, always wearing gloves and spraying material with disinfectant until thoroughly soaked before attempting to remove or clean.

In sugarcane, they move into the field as the cane matures and feed on the cane stalks. Another important treatment component is customer education so the customer understands the concepts of the proposed control program. The smallest imperfections during the construction and roofing of a home can lead to a rat infestation. Since none of these are anticoagulants, all can be used to control anticoagulant resistant populations of roof rats. Their burrowing habitats include soil along building foundations, under woodpiles and other piles of debris. Norway rats and the roof rats are very different in their habits, habitats and behavior, so the first requirement of a rat treatment program is to correctly identify the rat and develop a treatment plan that works for that species. This is a great supplementary treatment to trapping when you are dealing with larger rodent populations, or for outdoor populations. The Norway rat is generally considered the most important rat in the United States.

Their use for roof rats is limited to control within structures because roof rats rarely produce burrows. I highly recommend snap traps, not live cage traps, certainly not glue boards, and most definitely not poison! Never poison rats, it doesn't solve the problem and it just creates more problems. These rats are primarily active at night. Most pest control companies set rat traps, perhaps squirt some flammable expansion foam at very obvious holes, and then put you on a monthly service to remove the rats that are still getting in to your home. This is a great supplementary treatment to trapping when you are dealing with larger rodent populations, or for outdoor populations. At about 3 months of age they are completely independent of the mother and are reproductively mature. The advantages of trapping when compared to baiting include: 1) Trapping does not require the use of harmful poisons; 2) Trapping allows the user to know whether the rat was killed, whereas with baiting the rat will wander off and die somewhere else; 3) Trapping eliminates odor problems by allowing you to dispose of the rat carcass. They need not be baited. Proper ladder safety is a must, as is roof safety. Within a rat colony, they may be a few rats that are extra cautious and manage to avoid traps or eating rodent baits. The young are born in a nest about 21 to 23 days after conception.

Like the Norway rat, the roof rat is implicated in the transmission of a number of diseases to humans, including murine typhus, leptospirosis, salmonellosis (food poisoning), rat-bite fever, and plague. One of the more common techniques for bait use is to place the bait formulation in a tamper proof rodent bait station that protects the bait from accidental exposure to non-target animals or people. Your inspection process must include ladder work and climbing on a roof. Roof rats have hairless, scaly tails that are longer than their heads and bodies. Trichinosis may be contracted through eating undercooked meat of animals that have fed on rats. Newer rodenticides are much more efficacious and have resulted in the phasing out of these older materials over the last 20 years. Rodenticides were once categorized as acute (single-dose) or chronic (multiple dose) toxicants. Since roof rats rarely dig burrows, burrow fumigants are of limited use; however, if they have constructed burrows, then fumigants that are effective on Norway rats, such as aluminum phosphide and gas cartridges, will be effective on roof rats. Droppings Rats produce a lot of feces and the presence of their fecal droppings is a surefire way to spot an infestation. That is not the case! They sleep in your attic all day, and then at dusk they wake up, and start moving around, and that's why you hear them after dark. Remove pre harvest fruits or nuts that drop in backyards.
