Rodent entry elimination: We see many attempts by handymen, pest control companies, and Washtenaw County, Michigan rodent extraction companies that do not include the removal of any roofing material. Often the prevention includes the emptying of a can of foam into the void. Without the removal of roofing material, there is no assurance that rodent entry will be eliminated. When we encounter these substandard attempts, we must first remove the previous application.  When this includes foam, the extraction of the foam takes longer than the application of our wire prevention product.

Rodent elimination by those who are not insured exposes you, the Washtenaw County, Michigan homeowner, to unnecessary liabilities. It is in your best interest to request proof of insurance for worker’s compensation and public liability before work begins on your roof. It’s doubtful that you will find these companies or individuals carry such insurance.  Those who do not often work in this environment typically cannot afford expensive roofing insurance.

No rat bait ingredient is universally highly acceptable, and regional differences are the rule rather than the exception. Roof Rats can enter homes and other structures through openings as small as ½ inch. Another important treatment component is customer education so the customer understands the concepts of the proposed control program. Tracking powders are used much less often for roof rats than for Norway rats because roof rats frequent overhead areas within buildings. Liquid baits may be an effective alternative in situations where normal baits are not readily accepted, especially where water is scarce or where rats must travel some distance to reach water. Their tails are longer than the rest of their body and are uniformly dark colored. Both roof rats and Norway rats have a well-developed sense of smell and are wary of new things that are introduced into their home range. Adults range in weight from about 5-10 ounces. There are still outbreaks of plague in the United States and around the world today. Mating may occur year round in locations where the environmental conditions are sufficient. The adequate inspection of a large facility for the presence and location of roof rats often requires a nighttime search when the facility is normally shut down. In the third week they begin to take solid food. Our pest management professionals (PMPs) practice all techniques involved in Integrated Pest Management for rodents. Mating generally peaks in the warmer months of the year, but may occur year round in some areas. Parks with natural and artificial ponds, or reservoirs may also be infested. Trapping is an effective alternative to pesticides and recommended in some situations. I highly recommend snap traps, not live cage traps, certainly not glue boards, and most definitely not poison! Never poison rats, it doesn't solve the problem and it just creates more problems. For best results, try several baits to find out which one rats consume most. Selection of rodenticides and bait products must be done according to label instructions. Certain first-generation anticoagulants are registered as tracking powders for roof rat control; however, none of the second generation materials are so registered. The more dominant individuals occupy the better habitats and feed whenever they like, whereas the less fortunate individuals may have to occupy marginal habitat and feed when the more dominant rats are not present.
