Rodent entry elimination: We see many attempts by handymen, pest control companies, and Wayne County, Michigan rodent extraction companies that do not include the removal of any roofing material. Often the prevention includes the emptying of a can of foam into the void. Without the removal of roofing material, there is no assurance that rodent entry will be eliminated. When we encounter these substandard attempts, we must first remove the previous application.  When this includes foam, the extraction of the foam takes longer than the application of our wire prevention product.

Rodent elimination by those who are not insured exposes you, the Wayne County, Michigan homeowner, to unnecessary liabilities. It is in your best interest to request proof of insurance for worker’s compensation and public liability before work begins on your roof. It’s doubtful that you will find these companies or individuals carry such insurance.  Those who do not often work in this environment typically cannot afford expensive roofing insurance.

Removing clutter and any debris that creates hiding places rats can use as harborage sites. It is unlikely, however, they will be any more effective for roof rats than for Norway rats. Some of the more important non-chemical methods are: Trapping is the preferred method of indoor control. Sometimes they transmit the disease directly by contaminating food with their urine or feces. Always be sure that fresh bait is available continuously until rats stop feeding. The older rodenticides, formerly referred to as acute toxicants, such as arsenic, phosphorus, red squill, and ANTU, are either no longer registered or of little importance in rat control. Mating generally peaks in the warmer months of the year, but may occur year round in some areas. Having completed the repairs to wires, and possibly vacuumed feces or replaced insulation (not usually necessary) fumigate the attic to kill any remaining parasites or spores from the rats. Since none of these are anticoagulants, all can be used to control anticoagulant resistant populations of roof rats. They also often chew on inedible materials such as books, soap, and cans.

The latter two were ineffective for roof rats. Rat densities (numbers of rats in a given area) are determined primarily by the suitability of the habitat—the amount of available nutritional and palatable food and nearby protective cover (shelter or harborage). The young may continue to nurse until 4 or 5 weeks old. A preferred categorization would be “anticoagulants” and “non-anticoagulants” or “other rodenticides. Some of the first-generation anticoagulants (pindone and warfarin) are available as soluble rodenticides from which water baits can be prepared. Rats have been plaguing humans for centuries, famous for their continuously-growing sharp teeth, their desire for human food, their tendency to get into homes and buildings and create nests and their health problems - rats are the essence of a pest. Bubonic Plague - the famous disease that nearly wiped out humanity during the Middle Ages was eventually traced back to parasites like fleas carried by rats. They may try to sell you poison stations for exterior rat control, however the rats only find their way back into your attic or walls to die. The young are able to breed before they are four months old. Lives up to one year. In controlling roof rats with rodenticides, a sharp distinction must be made between control in and around buildings and control away from buildings such as in landfills and dumps, along drainage ditches and streams, in sewer water evaporation ponds, and in parks.

Mating may occur year round in locations where the environmental conditions are sufficient. Check the traps periodically, remove any dead trapped rats, and reset the traps. Some traps should be placed on the floor, but more should be placed above floor level (for example, on top of stacked commodities). In tropical or semi tropical regions, the season may be nearly year-round. Hundreds may be nesting in a city block-in underground burrows, in sewers, on roofs, inside buildings-with few people in the area realizing it. Timing a sealup for rats is impossible, because they leave for short periods, and they don't all leave at the same time of night. Historically, infected fleas have transmitted serious plagues from rats to humans. They need not be baited.
