Roof rats are prodigious breeders. Generally, Roof rats stay within 100 miles inland. The preferred habitat of Norway rats is just about anywhere people reside. With lemons they may eat only the rind and leave the hanging fruit intact. Once established, they readily breed and thrive within buildings, just as Norway rats do. Roof rats are adept climbers and not surprisingly are apt to build their nests in locations above ground. They may eat vegetation, but prefer to meat or meat-related wastes. From causing plague epidemics (the "Black Death" of Europe) to rat-bite fever, whether feeding on stored grain or gnawing electric wires, rats are enemies of humankind. Emphasis should be placed on the removal of as much harborage as is practical. Also, be careful when setting snap traps. High-frequency sound-producing devices are advertised for frightening rats, but almost no research exists on their effects specifically on roof rats.

Grease marks (from the oil and dirt of rats) often appear along walls next to runways. Control methods must reflect an understanding of the roof rat’s habitat requirements, reproductive capabilities, food habits, life history, behavior, senses, movements, and the dynamics of its population structure. Dense shrubbery, vine-covered trees and fences, and vine ground cover make ideal harborage for roof rats. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome is transferred via inhalation of rodent urine, droppings or saliva. Adult roof rats usually live about one year. Timing a sealup for rats is impossible, because they leave for short periods, and they don't all leave at the same time of night.
