Rodent entry elimination: We see many attempts by handymen, pest control companies, and Washtenaw County, Michigan rodent extraction companies that do not include the removal of any roofing material. Often the prevention includes the emptying of a can of foam into the void. Without the removal of roofing material, there is no assurance that rodent entry will be eliminated. When we encounter these substandard attempts, we must first remove the previous application.  When this includes foam, the extraction of the foam takes longer than the application of our wire prevention product.

Rodent elimination by those who are not insured exposes you, the Washtenaw County, Michigan homeowner, to unnecessary liabilities. It is in your best interest to request proof of insurance for worker’s compensation and public liability before work begins on your roof. It’s doubtful that you will find these companies or individuals carry such insurance.  Those who do not often work in this environment typically cannot afford expensive roofing insurance.

Sometimes they transmit the disease directly by contaminating food with their urine or feces. See Rat Trapping Tips and Rat Baiting Tips. They prefer to consume fruits (sometimes referred to as the “fruit rat” or “citrus rat”) and nuts, although roof rats are omnivorous and will feed on almost anything available to them. We service 99% of the USA. They lead you to believe there is no other rat control solution. A few baits are strong enough to cause death with a single feeding. No rat bait ingredient is universally highly acceptable, and regional differences are the rule rather than the exception. The long, sensitive whiskers (vibrissae) near their nose and the guard hairs on their body are used as tactile sensors. Strip and destroy all unwanted fruit when the harvest period is over. Some roof rat populations are skittish and will modify their travel routes and feeding locations if severely and frequently disturbed. Tracking powders.

Roof rats are not protected by law and can be controlled any time with mechanical or chemical methods. Unless the suitability of the rat’s habitat is destroyed by modifying the landscaping, improving sanitation, and rat-proofing, control methods must be unrelenting if they are to be effective. It has often been said that Norway rats will displace roof rats whenever they come together, but the evidence is not altogether convincing. PLEASE read my how to trap a rat guide for good tips and methods on proper rat trapping. Such caches may be found in a dismantled wood pile, attic, or behind boxes in a garage. One of the more common techniques for bait use is to place the bait formulation in a tamper proof rodent bait station that protects the bait from accidental exposure to non-target animals or people. Roof rats are omnivores and will feed on many types of vegetation such as fruits, grains, seeds and grocery produce. Glue boards will catch roof rats, but, like traps, they must be located on beams, rafters, and along other travel routes, making them more difficult to place effectively for roof rats than for Norway rats or house mice. Elsewhere, reports indicate that roof rats are slowly disappearing from localized areas for no apparent reason. Proper ladder safety is a must, as is roof safety. In landscaped yards they often live in overgrown shrubbery or vines, feeding on ornamentals, vegetables, fruits, and nuts.

Rats may live up to three years, but a lifespan of one and a half years is more common. Other indicators can include grease marks along surfaces as well as nests. They lead you to believe there is no other rat control solution. Their burrowing habitats include soil along building foundations, under woodpiles and other piles of debris. Roof rats frequently enter buildings from the roof or from accesses near overhead utility lines, which they use to travel from area to area. Keeping vegetation thinned out or removed from the perimeter of buildings. For further information see Norway Rats. Damage - a rat's teeth are constantly growing and that means they have to chew on hard things like wood to trim them back.
