Rodent entry elimination: We see many attempts by handymen, pest control companies, and Wayne County, Michigan rodent extraction companies that do not include the removal of any roofing material. Often the prevention includes the emptying of a can of foam into the void. Without the removal of roofing material, there is no assurance that rodent entry will be eliminated. When we encounter these substandard attempts, we must first remove the previous application.  When this includes foam, the extraction of the foam takes longer than the application of our wire prevention product.

Rodent elimination by those who are not insured exposes you, the Wayne County, Michigan homeowner, to unnecessary liabilities. It is in your best interest to request proof of insurance for worker’s compensation and public liability before work begins on your roof. It’s doubtful that you will find these companies or individuals carry such insurance.  Those who do not often work in this environment typically cannot afford expensive roofing insurance.

Okay, the first and most important thing you have to do is find out how rats are getting into the building. Always be sure that fresh bait is available continuously until rats stop feeding. Tracking powders can be placed in voids behind walls, near points of entry, and in well-defined trails. Other rat signs may also assist, but be aware that both species may be present. Lethal control often combines the use of rodenticides with non-toxic control measures such as snap traps or glue boards. They have also been found living in sewer systems, but this is not common. They need not be baited. Control of roof rat damage in agriculture represents yet another scenario. Rats are easier to exclude than mice because rats a typically larger. For more detailed information, see Rodent-proof Construction and Exclusion Methods. Adult females are able to reproduce at 3-5 months old, can produce up to five litters each year with about 5-8 young in each litter.

Overhead trap sets are particularly useful for roof rats. Grease marks are produced as the rodent travels along an edge, and the oils in their fur are deposited. The whiskers and guard hairs enable the animals to travel adjacent to walls in the dark and in burrows. Rats that are captured should be humanely destroyed and not released elsewhere because of their role in disease transmission, damage potential, and detrimental effect on native wildlife. Tracking powders can be placed in voids behind walls, near points of entry, and in well-defined trails. Roof rats can also enter openings in walls, eaves and roof from the branches of trees. Care must be exercised to ensure that baits are properly placed and the use instructions on the product’s label are strictly followed. Roof rats range along the lower half of the East Coast and throughout the Gulf States upward into Arkansas. Females can breed year-round. Make sure that all doors, windows and screens fit tightly in their frames and repair those that do not. Their use for roof rats is limited to control within structures because roof rats rarely produce burrows.

Sounds in the attic are often the first indication of the presence of roof rats in a residence. Eliminate vines growing on buildings and, when feasible, overhanging tree limbs that may be used as travel routes. They have coarse, brown fur, with lighter fur on the undersides. This means there are no more rats to feed on it because they are dead. The elimination of food and water through good warehouse sanitation can do much to reduce rodent infestation. Rub marks - rats get coated with dirt and they like to rub against the walls to find their way around a room’s perimeter, since they can't see so well. Trap at left is modified by fastening a piece of cardboard to expand its trigger size (traps with expanded treadles can also be purchased from several manufacturers). Where an entire warehouse may be fumigated for insect control with a material such as methyl bromide, all rats and mice that are present will be killed.
