Norway rats can climb, but not as well as roof rats, and are strong swimmers. Most pest control companies set rat traps, perhaps squirt some flammable expansion foam at very obvious holes, and then put you on a monthly service to remove the rats that are still getting in to your home. Roof rats are more aerial than Norway rats in their habitat selection and often live in trees or on vine-covered fences. Liquid baits may be an effective alternative in situations where normal baits are not readily accepted, especially where water is scarce or where rats must travel some distance to reach water. Adults range in weight from about 5-10 ounces. It is unlikely, however, they will be any more effective for roof rats than for Norway rats. Seal any openings larger than ¼ inch with caulk, wood, mesh, or other appropriate materials. If roof rats are seen exposed, it often indicates their hiding spaces are all filled by other rats or that they have been disturbed, such as by construction. In sugarcane, they move into the field as the cane matures and feed on the cane stalks. They often eat all the pulp from oranges while the fruit is still hanging on the tree, leaving only the empty rind. Rat guards are not without problems, however, because they may fray the insulation and cause short circuits.

When rodent-proofing against roof rats, pay close attention to the roof and roof line areas to assure all accesses are closed. There's nothing fun about finding rats around your home or property. Historically, infected fleas have transmitted serious plagues from rats to humans. Look for fresh droppings. The only way to solve a rat or mouse problem is to find every last point of entry into the house, and seal it shut. The most common rat in the area is the Norway rat. You will know the bait is working when the bait is no longer being consumed. The ears and tail are nearly hairless and they are typically 12 to 18 inches long including the tail and weigh 10 to 16 ounces. The Norway rat is generally considered the most important rat in the United States. As mentioned above, roof rats prefer above ground nesting locations in shrubs, trees, and dense vegetation. Adult females are able to reproduce at 3-5 months old, can produce up to five litters each year with about 5-8 young in each litter.
